Most often, 3D engines or the rendering systems in game engines are built upon a graphics application programming interface (API) such as Direct3D or OpenGL which provide a software abstraction of the graphics processing unit (GPU) or video card. Some game engines only provide real-time 3D rendering capabilities. However, they would become compacted according to the type of game being made.Īlthough most game engines can provide capabilities to work with 2D, 2.5D and 3D games. These libraries will be constant for any game. There is of course a bare minimum of libraries that are needed for any game. If I’m building a platformer I don’t need to have a compact physics engine to handle three dimensional collision or multiple body orbital simulations, and say my game was for deaf children, they won’t need an audio library. The good thing about using multiple engines is that you can trim down what you use according to the type of game you intend to make. Upon research I have found that the term “game engine” can be applied to any thing with a large set of libraries that work together to make the fundamentals of a game. Although OGRE does not include this content natively, it does expose an interface that makes it easy to work OGRE into an existing application. Because OGRE is a graphic engine, other libraries (content) needed to create a simple game would be: sound, networking, input, collision, physics, UI, and AI and resource management systems that are typically built as libraries and linked together to build the larger engine. However, it can easily be tied together with other distinctive engines to create a “game engine”. OGRE is a graphics engine, and only a graphics engine. This is a subtle distinction that I have tended to overlook in the past. Some “game engines” cannot actually be considered a game engine on their own merit even if they are labelled as such, take OGRE for example OGRE is an acronym standing for Object-oriented Graphics Rendering Engine. Animating models, collision detection, graphical user interfaces, and even portions of a game’s AI (artificial intelligence) can all be components that make up the engine and in contrast, the content of the game, specific models and textures, and the way the objects interact with the world are the components that make the actual game. Engines offer reusable components that can be manipulated to bring a game to life. Generally though, the concept of a game engine is fairly simple: it exits to abstract the details of doing common game-related tasks, like rendering, physics control, and input so that the developers can focus on the details that make their game unique. However, I have always found that there seems to be a fuzzy line between where a game’s engine ends and the content of a game begins. The term “game engine” has come to be a standard part of my vocabulary.

CounterStrike, Team Fortress, and Strike Force are among numerous new games created from existing game engines. Modern extensible and tweakible engines have allowed gamers and programmers alike to hack into the game’s core to create new games with new models, scenery, and sounds, or create different twists called “mods” on the existing game materials. Since then the concept of a “game engine” has expanded dramatically. The well-known classic title, Doom, was not just a ground-breaking game because of its content but also because it brought into existence and popularised a new game programming model, the “game engine”.
